\n\u201cYour table \u2013 it\u2019s neat!\u201d<\/span>
\nYet when it comes down to me,<\/span>
\nI\u2019m just a place for your feet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Half of you think I\u2019m a<\/span>
\nstool or divan \u2013 the other<\/span>
\nhalf ends up<\/span>
\nspelling me wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n

No one cares I have roots<\/span>
\nfrom a long ago date<\/span>
\nwhen the Ottoman Turks<\/span>
\ngave me fabrics ornate.<\/span><\/p>\n

The English, they saw what the
\n<\/span>Turks had created, and called<\/span>
\nme an ottoman, as<\/span>
\n\u201cfootstool\u201d was dated.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Egyptians were fun,<\/span>
\nOh they loved me, too \u2013<\/span>
\nI graced everyone\u2019s home,<\/span>
\nfrom the pharaohs to fools.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was loved by the Romans,
\n<\/span>adored by the Greeks \u2013 but when<\/span>
\nI made my way to Europe<\/span>
\nmy future got bleak.<\/span><\/p>\n

The climate was nasty,<\/span>
\nthe humidity no good.<\/span>
\nIt destroyed my whole family<\/span>
\nby wrecking our wood.<\/span><\/p>\n

I enjoyed a brief bout in the
\n<\/span>early 1800s, when the<\/span>
\nonset of design fairs<\/span>
\nbrought attention like thunder.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was oohed, I was ahhed as the<\/span>
\ngreatest thing yet \u2013 I was<\/span>
\nspruced up with leather<\/span>
\nand sold as a set.<\/span><\/p>\n

My dear friend Mr. Chair kept me
\n<\/span>company as a pair \u2013 but alas my<\/span>
\n15 minutes disappeared<\/span>
\nin thin air.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s not fair! I declare<\/span>
\nas we bring sweet relief.<\/span>
\nJust give us a chance — we’ll<\/span>
\nsweep you off your feet.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
